Wheelback Side Chair
Oak 18½" wide; 17" deep; 36" high.
In 1842 the prominent New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis completed Knoll, a Gothic Revival mansion, for William Paulding, a former mayor of New York.  Davis also designed furniture for the Pauldings.  These chairs replicate two of his originals.  In 1865 new owners renamed the Tarrytown, N.Y. estate Lyndhurst, which is how it is known today.
